What the students say

For years, I had planned on doing Law and Accounting in UL. I had picked all my Leaving Cert subjects to suit this choice but then in 6th year I did a student exchange to Germany. It changed my perspective. I realised that there was so much more to life than balance sheets when I returned to my home school there were leaflets for us advertising new courses in UL and the middle one was Journalism & New Media. I immediately wanted to do it. I loved writing and travelling. And, I was also a very outgoing person, I thought that the course would suit my personality.

The reason I feel it was the right choice for me was firstly, I like to work with young people and If considering a qualification in secondary school teaching, this should be an element to consider carefully. I had coached underage levels and knew I liked to work with young people. Taking into consideration the sporting background I had, I really liked to be around a sporting element work environment and PE teaching allowed me to do this. What one must not forget with this course is that you also complete a concurrent teacher education program in a 2nd subject to teach in secondary school such as math’s, English, Irish, Chemistry and Geography which was my chosen 2nd subject as I had taken Geography for my Leaving Cert as well as liking the subject myself also.
