University College Dublin (UCD) Social Life

The social life in UCD mainly revolves around events that are organised by the UCD Ents crew with the class reps and the societies also getting involved. They organise everything from nights out, to fundraisers, to guest speakers (Howard Marks, “Dr.Cox,” and Michael Sheen to name a few).

There are 3 bars on campus: the Student bar, the Forum bar, and the sports bar. The Student bar is the venue for many acts that come to play in UCD – these nights would nearly always be ticketed but cost usually at the lower end of the €8-25 range depending on the act. The bar can get ridiculously crowded however and another constant annoyance that students face is the outdoor smoking area – there aren’t any tables or chairs outside and you’re not allowed bring your drink outside. The Forum Bar and the Sports bar are more chilled out and class groups often go there for food or a drink after lectures.

The Students Union are really active around UCD, and have services to support students with everything and anything – from helping with personal issues to offering support if someone’s having trouble with their course. It’s easy just to email any one of the officers or drop into them in the Student Centre as they’re all really generous with their time. Also, in the Student Centre there’s a Nurse who students can see by appointment, although the waiting list is always long.

Freshers week is huge in UCD, so big that it makes up for the lack of a Rag week. Black Monday is on the first Monday of the semester and is the college’s bi-annual all day drinking event. A big marquee is set up on campus where most of the societies set up a stand. There are lots of different societies with something for everyone. The tent can be a little overwhelming because it’s packed for the week, but it’s the best place to meet people and hear about what’s going on. There is something on every night of Fresher week and loads of competitions during the day so it’s generally a busy, busy week followed by a long, well-needed sleep.

The campus bars close around 12 so if you want to head out, town is your only choice. There are lots of options but places like D2, Crawdaddy, Diceys, N.V., Palace and of course the infamous Coppers are always popular.

Some of the best nights are the Mystery Tours and also the Faculty balls, like the Arts Ball, the L & H Ball and the Commerce Ball. The most famous ball is the UCD Ball at the end of the year. It is all outdoors with two main stages and loads of food and drinks stalls. It starts at around 2pm and goes until 11pm, with a ton of acts and two or three headliners. It’s a great way to finish out the year!

If you’re not interested in going clubbing or to drink-related events, there are other options so don’t worry! The L & H society are renowned for holding debates on campus every Wednesday which cover a wide range of topics and often have guest speakers.

On a sunny day in UCD you’ll find students relaxing by the lake, secretly hoping that someone will fall in which funnily enough happens more often than you would think.
